You are working on your SaaS product. Congratulations, the entrepreneurial bug has bitten you.
While you are churning out code and getting closer to launching your product, it is very important to also focus on building a business, unless you are building a personal project.
Having said that, we understand. Most of us building SaaS products are pretty good with technology but when it comes to the boring stuff of building a business we crash and burn.
So to make this simple and manageable we have written this article to explain the 5 most important things you need to do before launching your SaaS product.
The tech stack that you choose to build your product is the least important thing in your journey to build a successful company. By successful company I mean a company that generates revenue through sales.
I have seen a lot of engineers argue on choosing the right tech stack and what it needs to be built with and so on.
We talk and argue about which programming language is good for scale and which is fast and so on.
However your customers are least bothered about the choice of your tech stack. All they want is for the product to solve their intended business problem.
So the thumb rule here is to start with the tech stack you know really well. This will ensure that you can write code at speed and quickly solve any technical roadblock that you may encounter.
You need to buy a domain the moment you decide on the name for your new company (aka product). It is very important for you to have the domain in advance.
Google ranking rewards domains that are older, which means older domains have a higher change of ranking above newer domains.
Also a landing page is the most important step towards marketing your product.
Once you purchase the domain, put a coming soon page. For the coming soon page template you can choose any free templates available on the internet.
Content marketing is crucial to a business’s success today. If your aim is to build a business by launching your product then you should take content marketing seriously.
You should start on it asap. Get a freelancer and ask them to write articles related to your product and the business problem your product solves.
Do not worry about the number of articles published. Rather make sure to publish good quality articles consistently. Do not be bothered about how many people are reading it. Be consistent.
Link your blog with the coming soon page so that the visitors can also navigate to your blog.
Submit your blog and website to Google for indexing.
Content marketing and building an audience takes time. So the sooner you start the better.
Do not expect your content to go viral. So not expect visitors to flow from Google on to your website. It will take approximately 1 to 2 years for your articles to give you any meaningful result. So be consistent.
Building an email list is important for your success. If done right, emails can be the number one source for your business.
Put up a simple form on your coming soon page that has an option to collect visitor name and email. Again you do not need anything fancy here. When someone enters their details just save it to a table.
These email addresses can be used later to send product status, updates and launch details.
Again not a lot of people will submit their details. Yet it's important to have the form on the website.
This might not be possible when you are setting out to build your product. Having said that, you need to figure this out as soon as possible.
This will help your freelance content creator to write the right kind of articles that your target audience will like to read.
It will also help you in sharing the articles with them on the right social media platform.
For example if your target audiences are active on LinkedIn then you can share your updates and articles on LinkedIn.
Try your best to figure this out as early as possible.
Building a successful saas company is a slow and steady process. It can be difficult and take a good number of years to get to a meaningful level.
The key here is to work on the basics and keep things consistent.
Sometimes inspite of doing all things right, you might fail. Which is totally fine. The lessons learnt will supercharge you in your next initiative.
I love what Jason Lemkin says, If your product does not get 10 unrelated customers in 2 years, then it's time to move on to something else.
So not get super stressed with the result. Focus on the controllables and be consistent.
